Reintroducing my favorite Rap Group: The Dean's List

So, I adore Dean’s List! If you haven’t already, you need to check out their hit mixtape The Drive-In. I instantly fell madly in love with the lead rapper Sonny’s undeniably unique voice. After attending a concert they held at the Wow Hall in Eugene, Oregon, I grew an even greater admiration for their music. They truly are breaking boundaries in redefining and reinventing hip hop music with their distinctive beats and rhymes. As we all anxiously await for the April 3 release of their debut album titled Generation X, I want to share with you my all-time favorite song off their Drive-In mix tape titled “La Vie,” in which Sonny brilliantly raps over an incredibly catchy French sample. Also, if you haven’t already, check out the release of their new single titled “Youth” off the highly anticipated Generation X!

Favorite Voice Performance of the Week: Battle between Geoff McBride vs. Sera Hill: "Chain of Fools"

A little pitchy in parts, but overall a solid performance from Sera. Though, I have to admit I am sad to see Geoff go. I felt every lyric he sang with gusto, passion and heart. I wish both could have stayed in the competition!

My review on Cudi & Dot Da Genuis' album WZRD

My thoughts on the Album:
Let me first start out by saying that when I found out that Cudi was going to do a rock inspired album, I was less than thrilled! I was dreading to accept the reality that he had chosen to take this path. I was truly hoping for a third installment of Man on the Moon. I instantly fell head over heels for Cudi when listening to both these albums.  He had successfully introduced his audience to a new approach to rap music, in which he embellished his beats with futuristic melodies and produced a purely unique vocal like no other rapper in the game. Both Man on the Moon I & II took me to a place I had never been taken before. A place of euphoria where I could dance with the moon and stars. My initial confusion in his newfound approach to his third album WZRD has now grown into deep adoration and profound appreciation. The more I listen to the album the more I fall deeper in love with it. I was firstly amazed at the fact that Cudi picked up the guitar a year before recording this album and ended up playing the guitar, keyboard, percussion and drum portions for this album. I have to say I've never really been a huge fan of rock music, but Cudi has definitely opened the door to a realm of new and exciting possibilities. Although a good majority of the songs on the album introduce us to this new side of Cudi, I was also happy to find a few songs intermixed within the album that sound like the old soulful Cudi we have all grown to love. His stories of love, pain, and heartache are rampant themes throughout the album, in which a lot of people will be able to relate to. In addition, we also see songs in which he discusses his new sober self. He emphasizes that this newly sober Cudi has learned from his mistakes, matured as an individual and has grown into a man he is now proud of being. I highly recommend all Cudi fans to purchase this album as you will definitely not regret it. Below I have listed my top 4 favorite songs of the album :)

1) Teleport to Me, Jamie ft. Desire
This is definitely my favorite song off this album. The beauty of this song is not only the clever sampling of Desire's "Under Your Spell," but also the lyrics tell a relatable story. I think we can all relate to a time when we wanted a loved one, who was in far proximity from us, to instantly be transported across both space and distance just so that we could feel their warmth and have as Cudi puts it "bonafide chillin time." Personally, every time I listen to this song, I close my eyes and can feel every lyric as if it were engraved deep within me.

2)Upper Room
Cudi pours his heart and soul in this touching song with an incredibly powerful message. He starts out by questioning and further vehemently doubting that anyone could survive walking in his shoes. He goes on to emphasize his disbelief in miracles and his strong belief in fate and destiny. One of the most poignant verses in this track is Cudi's ability to express his growth and maturity in transforming himself from a kid to a man.  My heart melts every time I listen to the part in which he declares: "Finally I can say, I'm feeling proper, No need to worry I'm a happy new me."

3) The Dream Time Machine
This is another song with incredibly deep meaning intermixed with a beat that is so incredibly calm and soothing. Listening to it makes you feel as though you are in a heavenly dream soaring through space and time. This song again emphasizes how Cudi is a changed man who is strong and has acquired a "good difference" within himself. He highlights the fact that he has "started from something small," but now he is at a point where he is proud of who he has become.

4) Love Hard
This song is where the rocker inspired Cudi comes out. His brilliant guitar playing is showcased and intermingled with a strong lyrical message. Cudi beautifully expresses how he has found the love of his life, but is unsure if she feels the same way. He struggles in figuring out whether or not his lover is being true and 100% honest with him. He further stresses the importance of loving hard, letting down your guard, and following your heart.
